Spoken and Unspoken is a Side Quest in No Rest for the Wicked. This quest will have you go through the gauntlet at the Cerim Crucible, as it would be held in the oldest traditions of the Cerim. At the behest of Roan and Elsa, you'll have to find your way through the Crucible and get past Torn enemies, including a boss fight against the Echo Knight.

Roan gave us an old tome from the rookery and told us to give it to the historian Elsa, in the ruin that lies beneath the stone mason's shop.

How to Unlock Spoken and Unspoken Quest in No Rest for the Wicked

This quest is unlocked by completing the quest, Servant of God, and then speaking to Roan at the town square right after Ellsworth's speech regarding the recent events in Isola Sacra. See Spoken and Unspoken on the [No Rest for the Wicked Map].

Speak to Elsa

After Ellsworth's speech at the Town Square in Sacrament, you'll get the chance to speak to Roan in order to start this quest. He'll tell you about mysteries that lie in Sacrament's past that he's discovered in the Old Leather Tome. He'll tell you to seek out Elsa to confirm them and give the book to you. You can then find Elsa at the Masonry.

Head down from the town square to the city's marketplace and head north past Eleanore and Whittacker's shop. At the end of the path, head northeast past the Church. Take the stairs up to your left. You should eventually come across a signpost that tells you that the Masonry is up the stairs to your left, so head up there. The guard will say it's closed but you can ignore her and head inside.

Inside you'll immediately notice a hole in the ground. There's a chest hidden behind the breakable objects. Head down the hole and follow the path. You'll come across a Fire Pit you can use if you need it. You'll find Elsa a bit further down near a door. She'll tell you that she hasn't found the key to opening the seal. She will notice your book however and, upon reading it, realize that what you need is Cerim blood offered on the pedestal at the center of the room. Make your offering and the seal be undone, opening the way inside.

There'll be a Whisper north of the room when you head down. When you access it, large statues will be revealed with smaller pedestals below them. Elsa will read the inscription for you and it'll tell you to offer up Fallen Ember at the pedestals to begin training trials that were designed in ancient times by the Cerim to make themselves stronger. You should already have picked some up by now without knowing what to use them for for this entire time. Offer up a Fallen Ember at the pedestal along with your blood, and the ruins will react. You can now head to the circular platform in the middle of lit braziers to start the gauntlet of the Cerim Crucible.

Beat the Cerim Crucible: How Does the Gauntlet Work?

As Elsa said, the trials will consist of environments and enemies that exist at different times or planes. You'll be facing a lot of ancient Cerim, and even ones that have succumbed to the Pestilence. The enemies and their positioning can vary but they'll mostly be some of the most difficult enemies you've faced so far. You'll need to defeat all enemies on one floor to move on to the next. There are eight floors sporting eight different environments which are similar to places you've visited in the game throughout your journey. When you clear them, you'll get a chance to beat the final boss of the Gauntlet. The arrangement of the eight available floors will be randomized per run, so you have to be prepared for any of them every time. When you die, the next time you enter the trials will reset the count to the first floor and you'll have to start all over.

Defeat the Boss: Echo Knight

This will be the most difficult fight you'll have in the Early Access of the game. This fight will have two phases, one with the knight riding atop a horse, and the second and final phase will be him and him alone, much quicker and more relentless. While he is much bigger on the first phase in terms of the hitbox you have to deal some damage, he will still be one of the quickest enemies you've fought so far. As always. keep your distance when necessary, and be patient with our counterattacks.

During the second phase of the fight, his attacks will have more frequency and his moves will try and hit you for a few more consecutive times. His rush is now a dash that may include an additional swing from his sword, so don't rest on your laurels after dodging the charge. Most of his attacks now will happen a few consecutive times - at least three times, so keep your distance or keep dodging until he finishes attacking before you start your own counterattack. This includes his basic sword sings, stabs, and when he fires pestilence balls in succession. One of his attacks will have him jump in the air before swinging down while shooting a ball of pestilence in your direction. He'll then proceed to do an upward swing at you. The first part of this combo can be difficult to dodge because of the change in perception caused by the isometric third-person viewpoint, so calmly analyze the graphics and avoid the attack accordingly.

He'll have an attack combo that'll affect most of the entire battlefield, and you'll have to use your dodge frames to dodge some of them perfectly. This happens when he starts stabbing his sword into the ground. Dodge away from the first stab, which creates blue flames in a circle around him, and then dodge the next stabs at the right time because they'll cause damage to most if not the whole battlefield. As with all bosses, take your time and be aware of the windows of opportunities that you can attack without trading some damage to yourself. With some patience, you'll be able to overcome the once great Cerim knight.

Speak to Elsa

After you defeat the Echo Knight, get your rewards from the chest, which includes an Ancient Stone Tablet, and then ride the circular platform back to the first chamber. She'll be able to translate the inscription on it. It seems that this endless gauntlet did indeed function as a training area for the best Cerim before it drove them to madness. The Echo Knight you just fought seems to be one of the five best Cerim to undertake the trials and turn into something wretched. This completes the quest.
