Upgrades for No Rest For The Wicked contains information regarding upgrades for the player's arsenal. Players can upgrade their Weapons, Shields, and Armor by collecting upgrade materials and heading to the blacksmith in Sacrament after the events of the first Story Quest, Sacrament (Quest). Apart from this, players can also have upgrades in terms of Enchantments and Infusing to their Weapons, which give them extra passive bonuses to enjoy and can round out different kinds of Builds. Finally, players will also have the option to slot Runes into their Weapons with Runes that they've extracted from other Weapons. This can also drastically change their build as it directly affects the move set that they get to use when they have certain Weapons equipped. This page covers all the different types of Upgrades in the game and how they work.

How to Upgrade Your Equipment with Filmore in No Rest For the Wicked

After you complete the first story quest, Sacrament (Quest), Filmore becomes available as the city's blacksmith. You'll be able to buy Tier 1 Tools, Weapons, and Crafting Ingredients from him when he first gets unlocked. After you upgrade his smithy with Danos, you'll be able to unlock his Upgrade feature. This feature can be used on Weapons and Armor. When you Upgrade a piece of Equipment, you're doing two main things:

  • Increasing its base Stats (offensive for Weapons, defensive for Armor)
  • Increasing its Tier level

Whenever you Upgrade a piece of Equipment, you will fill up the diamond shape that presents its Tier level. Each upgrade will fill it up one-third of the way. The max Tier level is Tier 3. This means that you can only upgrade an item, with no prior upgrades, for a maximum of nine times before it's fully upgraded. Each upgrade will cost a certain amount of coins as well as materials specific to each item.

How Does Enchantment Work in No Rest For the Wicked

Enchantment is a feature that is available to the player as soon as they reach Sacrament and complete the first story quest, Sacrament (Quest)Eleanor is the NPC in charge of this type of upgrade. Enchantment can only be done on white or Common items. Enchantment will turn them into either a blue/ Rare item or a purple/Plagued item. The passive bonuses (and penalty for Plagued items) are randomized and so you may or may not get the ones that fit your build. This happens at the cost of one Silver, and a bit of the flexibility of the Common item, as it loses all except one Gem slot and two Rune slots.

How Does Infusion Work in No Rest For the Wicked

Infusion is also a feature that is available through Eleanor in the game. Infusion is the process of infusing Gems to a Weapon's Gem slots for an additional passive bonus. Each Gem grants a different specific passive bonus and the numerical aspect of the bonus is randomized within a range. For example, a Chipped Emerald grants the passive bonus of recovering Stamina whenever you deal damage, and you'll roll a number between 1-3% when you infuse it into an item. This process comes at the cost of the Gem used to infuse, one Silver, and the Gem slot that is used up for the infusion. It's important to note that you cannot stack Gems that have the same effect into one item.

No Rest For the Wicked Runes Guide

What are Runes in No Rest For the Wicked

Runes in the game are both items and special moves that can be granted to a Weapon. Most Weapons will have at least one Rune automatically slotted that is appropriate for that Weapon type. White or Common items will have four Rune slots, allowing you to pool all the best Runes into one Weapon should you wish to. However, higher rarity items will only have two Rune slots, trading flexibility for better passive bonuses.

Where to Get Runes in No Rest For the Wicked

Runes can be acquired through the following methods:

  • Equipped with your Weapon of choice upon picking it up
  • Bought from Eleanor's shop in Sacrament
  • Extracted from a Weapon using Eleanor's services

Eleanor's shop can be upgraded through Danos a couple of times, which results in actual visual upgrades of her shop, as well as more wares. This includes more Runes to buy that you can then slot into your Weapons. The feature to extract Runes from Weapons will be available without upgrading her shop. However, keep in mind that extracting a Rune from a Weapon will destroy that Weapon permanently.

How to Extract or Add Runes in No Rest For the Wicked

The feature of Rune modification will be available as soon as you reach Sacrament and complete the story quest, Sacrament (Quest). Simply head to Eleanor and choose the 'Rune' option from her menu. From there, you'll be able to choose one of your Weapons to add Runes to. As mentioned previously, you can also extract a Rune from a Weapon but this will destroy that Weapon permanently and you will not be able to use it at all. Adding or Extracting Runes does not have any other cost.

It's important to note that not all Runes can be added to all Weapons. Upon examining the Rune from your inventory you'll be able to see what type of Weapon it can be equipped to. Most Runes that add an elemental damage or passive elemental or plague effect to a Weapon can be added to any Weapon. The rest however may be specific to whether you can wield a Weapon with just one hand or you have to use both hands. Either that or the Rune is specific to Staves or Bows. This is actually incredibly realistic and at least we're not limited to each type of Weapon. You can extract Runes from a sledgehammer and possibly use it on a Greatsword for example.

Important Tip for Rune Modification in No Rest For the Wicked

Contrary to popular belief, you can actually try out the special attack that a Rune enables a Weapon to do even if you don't meet the stat requirements for the original Weapon it comes with before you permanently equip it to your Weapon of choice. To do this, you first have to extract that Rune from the Weapon. Afterward, simply add that Rune to a Weapon that you do meet the stat requirements for that the Rune is allowed to be added to. Naturally, you'll want to do this on a throwaway Weapon or a Weapon you don't mind getting permanently destroyed. If you do end up liking the unique ability, you can just extract the Rune, destroying the throwaway Weapon permanently, and then add it to your Weapon of choice. If you don't end up liking it for now, you can just store that Weapon for when you find a suitable Weapon to add the Rune to.
